Breadcrumbs are an important part of every website. These are small text paths, located at the top of the page which tells the user about which website they are on. They also tell Google about the structure of the website. For example, the breadcrumb for our blog page is websitetoon.com/blog. Breadcrumbs appear on search engine result pages. With the help of breadcrumbs, users can get an idea about where the page is placed on a website.
What are the types of breadcrumbs?
There are three types of breadcrumbs:
1. Hierarchy-based breadcrumbs: This is the most common type of breadcrumb and it’s how we use breadcrumb on the site. Hierarchical breadcrumbs tell you where you are on-site structure and how many steps are there to go back to the homepage.
For instance: home>blog>category>blog name
2. Attribute-based breadcrumbs: These types of breadcrumbs are mostly used for e-commerce websites. Breadcrumb trail is made up of attributes.
For example: home>product>category>gender>size>color
3. History-based breadcrumbs: History-based breadcrumbs directly deal with the browsing history and how you navigate the site. It lists the pages in the order they were navigated.
For instance: previous page>previous page> current page
What are the advantages of breadcrumbs?
- Google loves them: Breadcrumbs give Google another way to identify site structure. Google can also use breadcrumbs in search results, which is good for the optimization of the site. But to increase the opportunity of appearing on Google, you need to focus on site structure.

We need to keep the visitors happy and reduce the friction as much as possible. Breadcrumbs work as an interface element for users and instantly show them the way out.
